Standard 10.8 Summary
After the end of WWI, Germany, Italy and Japan wanted to expand their empires by imperializing. Several countries in Europe and the US used isolationism and appeasement to try and maintain peace. However, Hitler, the leader of Germany, betrayed them and began to attack. He also began the Holocaust, the extermination of Jews and other minority groups and killed six million in total. During the first part of the war, the Axis powers, Germany, Italy and Japan, were leading. However, at the Battle of Stalingrad, the Allies created a turning point, where the Axis were guaranteed defeat. Soon after, Germany surrendered and fighting continued in the Pacific. The US became involved after the bombing at Pearl Harbor, by the Japanese. After the US bombed Japan with two atomic bombs, the Japanese surrendered and the war was over.
