In your opinion, what was the most significant battle of WWII?
World War 2 was the most destructive war in history. An estimated 50-70 million people died as a result. During the first stages of war, the Axis powers were winning the war. The most significant battle of WWII is the Battle of Stalingrad because it led to the first major loss for the Germans and changed the course of the war. It was very common for soldiers to write in diaries to document what happened during the war. A diary written by a German soldier, from August 1942 to December 1942, shows how Germans were confident in taking Stalingrad, but over time, were cornered and defeated. "August 10. The Fuhrer’s orders were read out to us. He expects victory of us. We are all convinced that they can’t stop us . . .November 29. We are encircled. December 26. A curse on this war!" These diary entries prove that the Germans had lost an important battle and as a result, weakened the Axis's strength for the remainder of the war. The Battle of Stalingrad was the most important battle in WW2 because it led to the first major loss for Germany, eventually weakening the Axis powers for the rest of war.
Artifact This artifact is part of a German soldier's diary, from when he fought during the Battle of Stalingrad. At first he seems confident that he and his troops will win the war. However, towards the end of the entries, it seems like he is sure to lose the battle. This shows that the Axis powers were disadvantaged at first but held up a good fight and eventually overturned the German troops leading to a major loss for the Axis powers.
